As a 70 year old self-appointed Grandma to the missionaries who come through my neighborhood, I have heard their stories and seen their discouragement. And I often think of the incredible young man who endured a shipwreck, loneliness, illness, rat-bitten feet, attempted seduction and a typhoon, all because of his total faith in the Lord. How I wish I could help them all to find that complete faith and dedication which got John Groberg through these challenges. If I had a magic wand, I'd make this required reading for all prospective missionaries (and their parents!)

I borrowed this from the library at the church and once I started reading it I knew I wanted my own copy! I wanted to start underlining and writing notes in the margins (which I don't generally do in books) so I bought my own copy. I bought one for a friend too. John H. Groberg shares his story in a way that the lesson fit right into your life. You want to be a better person, you want to improve your life. It was written beautifully and I enjoyed every chapter. I will read this again and again.
I loved every minute it the adventures of Brother Groberg’s adventures in a land so foreign to his understanding. It was very spiritually uplifting. A great read!!!
At first I tried checking it out of the library but found I'd have to renew in person! However, that copy was read by my husband before our vacation. I couldn't renew from Hawaii! So I ordered a used copy from . Best money I've ever spent. It's full of adventure and real life spiritual experiences from a devout member of my Church. I have loved reading this book and did not want it to end. I read it on the plane, on Waikiki beaches and finished it waiting for an appointment after vacation. It's my kind of book. I even added it to my blog.
Such a delight to watch this movie. It is a true story, and shows a small segment of this mans life, and I am sure it had a significant impact on all the other life choices he made afterward. So sweet, but not sappy. Beautiful love for his God, the people he befriended and served, and his future wife. Wish we could all be so valiant.
My family and I have loved this book for years! Anyone considering serving a full-time mission should definitely read this book! It is a thousand times better than the movie!
I found the book fascinating. He had the most amazing experiences working as a missionary in Tonga in the 1950s. This is an excellent true life adventure story.
Elder Groberg is probably one of the best writers I have ever had the opportunity to read. While yes there was several grammatical mistakes, I did not find myself stumbling over mistakes and the book continued right along.

This is a story of hope, faith and love. Not just a love story about him and his future wife but one about falling in love with his mission and with the Tongan people. Elder Groberg shows us through his experiences the true meaning of hope an faith, and exactly how they are interconnected.

My recommendation is that those of all ages read this book, I highly believe that both members and non members of the lds church will fall in love with this one man's journey.
