Renee Bernard generally writes good stories that are populated with well developed characters in a story that is interesting and engaging. I won't say that she failed completely with "Obsession," but for me, this one fell short of the mark.

Darius' character was fairly well developed, but the character of Helen/Isabel didn't seem believable. Without going into too much detail, I just found it hard to believe that any person experiencing the horrors that were part of Helen's/Isabel's brief marriage would fall into bed with Darius as quickly as she did. I also felt that the resolution to the near insurmountable problem keeping the H/h from their happy ending was bogus, given the personality of Helen/Isabel's husband. Finally, given the heinous nature of the husband's actions, I felt that there should have been a bit more retribution.

Bottom line: if believability and logic are not terribly important to you, you'll probably like this book a great deal. It's reasonably well written, but my credulity suffered greatly.

Obsession Wears Opals by Renee Bernard is the fifth book in the Jaded series and it begins with a heart-thumping scene. It is just as expertly written as the other books in the series with all the interesting “Jaded” characters and all the sensual romantic love readers have come to expect from this series.
To get over severe abuse like this so quickly and without long lasting input was unlikely and silly...solution to issue was clever and possible
The subject matter for this book (wife abuse) was very disturbing. For this reason, I did not enjoy this book as much as the other books in the series. The end was not satisfying as the abusive husband got to keep his wife's money and was not punished for his abuse.
I read another one in this series and loved it but not this one. I didn't really buy the depravity of Richard after being so sweet to her during their engagement (although a quick one) and only during the latter half of the book did I realize he could, I guess, be that depraved. So because he was so wicked to her, I found it hard to believe that she would fall in love so quickly with Darius and trust him so thoroughly.

Also, I just found it very boring! There wasn't much action at all, and most of it took place in his house in the country, where there were only two other people around. It just didn't thrill me and I almost didn't finish the book .

Lastly, I didn't like the ending where Richard didn't suffer much at all, after she enlightened us to his true character. I wanted him to suffer and lose much more than he did.
I downloaded this because it was free and the opening pages hooked me. (If you don't use 's "Look Inside," you should.) I was going to put off reading it until I'd caught up on all my other books. However, I couldn't resist it.

I just liked the characters and situation--daughter of a marquis breaking away from cruel husband and serious, kind, attractive scholar who takes her in. I also liked the straightforward plot that doesn't depend on artificial miscommunication. This type of story often contains scary, stressful attacks, long fight scenes, maybe a kidnapping, but this book doesn't have any and I didn't miss them. Warning It does contain brutal sex (not between the main characters).

I thought the character of the housekeeper was perfectly interwoven.

This is the first book in the The Jaded Gentlemen series that I've read, but it is written so that I was able to follow the story anyway. Only the names of the others in the group were a little confusing, especially as the author keeps switching from first to last names.

My only criticism is the book could have used a little more editing. The writing is great, but it contains lots of minor errors such as "they'll" for "there'll" and "staid" for "stead." There also seemed to be a few inconsistencies and loose ends (very few). These errors did not keep me from enjoying the book, and now I'm excited about reading the rest of the series.
Darius Thorne is my absolute favorite of the Jaded. Poor Isabel on the run from the dastardly Richard, a hideously evil husband who enjoys beating his wife. She ends up in Edinburgh, Scotland at the home of Darius Thorne beaten and nearly dead from cold and exhaustion. As she hides from her evil husband, she falls in love with the dashing scholarly Darius. A must read.
This is the 5th installment in the "Jaded Gentlemen "series. I enjoyed meeting Darius for the first time, because even though he's mentioned in previous books via letters, his story occurs concurrently in Scotland rather than London. Isabel was an interesting heroine and I enjoyed her character development thru the book. Weaving this story into the overarching storyline of the series was well done and adds much needed information, but I'm still waiting for the conclusion of the mystery that has been running throughout the entire series. There is one more gentleman's story to tell. ... An overall good book, but at this point in the series, it may be difficult to understand the entire crew and their relationships without reading more of the books; I don't know if it would be a good standalone novel. For those who need to know these things, this books does contain scenes of sexual violence, descriptions of violence and abuse, sexual scenes and some profanity British style.
