I've read many of Ms White's books with great enjoyment but I'm afraid this one wasn't very satisfying. It was almost as though she had no feel for the two main characters and the story in turn failed to engage and seemed contrived. I even though it might have been one of her earlier works but no, it's newer.
Don't ever use the phrase "chick lit" for Karen White who is one of the best women's fiction writers today. I have read nearly all of her books and eagerly awaited the publication of this latest, Sea Change. She always keeps her excellent writing, vivid descriptions, well created characters in the forefront while coming up with a very different plot each book. As usual, White kept me up into the wee hours unable to put this book down. This time she weaves the tale between the early 1800s and today so clearly there is never any doubt where you are. And finally, expect no spoilers from me, things come together as smoothly in the end as the reader regretfully turns the last page. This is one of the best of the summer so get a copy today and enjoy.
Definitely a page turner, and the author's style of writing lures you into getting involved with the book's characters, story line and location. The author does a great job in describing the local area and she is very accurate in her mention of local places of interest. I love her writing style and her descriptions. It's not a book where you know what the ending will be and I like that. The paranormal seasoning throughout the book was interesting to me and the book took me away to another time and place. The only thing I felt that was a little much is Ava's adoration for Matthew, which seemed over the top and rather sappy at times (the "I have loved you before I knew you" kind of dialogue). Had that been more realistic I would have given 5 stars instead of 4. I recommend the book as it's a great read. This is the second book of Karen White's I've read and I'll definitely read more now.
Karen Whites novel "Sea Change" is not your typical romance novel. What a refreshing read! A story that will keep your mind working and guessing what the next secret will reveal.
You will be taken on a journey of strong family roots deep in the south on St. Simons Island. K.W. weaves a story that is tightly plotted between present day and the 1800's. Opening your mind and heart to the possibility that the universe is bigger than we know it. That history can come back to right the wrongs. KW has brought two different eras together with ease.
This is a fantastic story of Family-Love and the possibility that our souls can be forever intertwined.
Being a Mother and Gardener myself, I can not help but quote KW as she wrote in this story "Being a mother is being a gardener of souls. You tend your children, make sure the light always touches them. You sow your seeds and reap what you sow." I Love this passage!!!

I've read all of Karen White's previous books and was thrilled when this one was released. I love books that alternate between first-person narratives. In Sea Change, the narrators are Pamela, in 1804, and Ave, in 2011. They are connected across time by their professions -- both are midwives -- and by their residence on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Is there another connection as well? White leaves that up to reader to decide; without being a spoiler, I leaned toward the possibility that the women did share another connection. The American South seems to be an especially mysterious place.
For the most part, the characters are believeable. Some are more likeable than others in a "what's up with him or her?" sort of way that makes the less likeable ones more puzzling in their behavior than truly villanous.
In addition to the tales of their parallel lives, Ava's story has layers of mystery that build to an exciting conclusion. I recommend this book as a beach read in summer or for a summer-like escape in winter.
Not up to par with Ms. White's more recent books I have read. I ditto all the other critical comments and add a couple of my own. For an author who writes about the Low Country, this book displays a shocking lack of knowledge about the Georgia coastline. Ms. White would have us believe that St. Simons is an easy commute "down to" Savannah. Maybe south down to Jacksonville, but certainly not north up to Savannah! And she goes to great lengths in her narratives to write "whom" instead of "who," but then leaves that preposition dangling at the end of the sentence. Details like those drive me crazy when I am reading. And those details are very unusual for the other Karen White books I've read. Maybe she didn't write this one? Maybe her long-time copy editors quit on her? I hope it's just that she has improved greatly in the past few years.
I've found Karen White's "Sea Change" with the back and forth writing of the main characters from the past(1800's to 2011 present day)Interesting to the reader to try to fit the pieces together and figure out what happen to our characters during the 1800's. Could Ava really be Pamela from another life time? Do old houses carry the memories and spirits of another time? A quick fantastic read for anyone to enjoy.....
