From Notting Hill with Love…Actually by Ali McNamara was such a fun audiobook to listen to. The book is narrated by Finty Williams and what an awesome job she does! This is the perfect book to grab for the beach or just if you feel you need something light and really good to escape into for a while. I read it with my book club and we all enjoyed it and despite being a fun book it also has some serious issues that can be discussed.Scarlett loves the movies and I must say that I related to her very well on this level as we seemed to like the same movies and I really enjoyed how snippets from movies were added into the narrative. I really think that added so much to me liking this book. Anyhow Scarlett thinks life should play out like a movie and as we all know it just doesn’t. Her fiancé David isn’t quite living up to her expectations but then how can he when he doesn’t resemble the gorgeous Hugh Grant. So when Scarlett is offered the opportunity to house-sit in Notting Hill for jumps at it. After all it is the setting for one of her all time favorite movies so it has to be a good sign.
There she meets her neighbour Sean who, while being very good looking, is pretty much just as equally irritating. Interestingly enough as time passes by it seems that Scarlett’s life is following right along with some of the scenes of her favorite movies. Another thing she can’t deny is her attraction to Sean and when he begins to help her in her search for her mother – well let’s just say that makes him all the more appealing. So what will Scarlett do: go with the safe choice in David or live on the edge and choose Sean?
I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed this book. So much so that I already picked up the audio of the sequel From Notting Hill to New York…Actually and can’t wait to listen to it. Even better is that the narrator is again Finty Williams and I think she’s the perfect choice for these books. If you’re looking for some great chick lit I’d say this is one you don’t want to pass by. I will say though that it helps to have a love of romantic comedies as they are referenced a lot so knowing and loving those movies really does add to the enjoyment of this book.

From Notting Hill with Love Actually Ali McNamara 9780751544954 Books Reviews
I have loved all of Ali McNamara's other books but this one left me flat. In fact, I didnt even bother to finish it. I have always rated Her other books as five stars, but this one just didn't do it for me. The heroine , Scarlett , was exactly as her family and friends stated . Obsessed with films . It was kind of cute at the beginning but by halfway through the book it's got a little tiring. Itngot to the point where I dreaded seeing another reference to Nottinghill , or another Hugh Grant or Brad Pitt movie. I know movies were the basis of this book but for me it just didn't work. Sorry Ms. McNamara this book just didn't have the charm and character of your other books. Definitely not a favorite of mine .
This will be my first book review, but probably the 100th free book I have read in the last 2 years. Many of them are pretty cheesy, cute romantic stories that will entertain for a little, but really don’t make me feel any differently (smarter, happier, whatever) afterwards. I figured this would be another one of those, but surprisingly I was wrong.
I enjoyed Love Actually and had maybe seen a few of the other movies (Sleepless in Seattle, Bridget Jones’ Diary) mentioned throughout this book, but most I had not (Notting Hill for example). There may very well have been references I had missed but most I felt were weaved into the story line as the main character, Scarlett O’Brien’s mission throughout the book was to prove that real-life could be as good as the movies.
The book takes place around London and Notting Hill, so there is a short adjustment to the language, i.e. the go to the cinema (not the movies), but really gives you the feel of being in England. Scarlett is likeable from the start and I really felt I was along for the ride on her journey to find her mother and is true movie love really exists!
There was romance, a mystery, fun characters, and enough action to keep the pages turning. Very enjoyable read and highly recommended!
After the book showed up on my daily recommendations from , I ordered it after glancing at a few reviews. I try not to read detailed reviews beforehand because they frequently include plot spoilers. But I did read enough to see that many others had found it entertaining and lighthearted, and I wholeheartedly agree ! It was a fun page turner, and I found myself cheering Scarlett on in her escapades.
With her pending marriage looming on the horizon, Scarlett it feeling a bit trapped and dissatisfied with her life since it bears so little resemblance to the many movies she admires. She is always looking for "movie moments" in her life - particularly kismet, serendipitous, romantic moments - but her much more pragmatic fiancé and father trivialize her movie obsession and try to convince her that life is not like the movies. However, both her father and fiancé support her decision to visit Notting Hill in London for a month-long house sitting assignment during which she hopes to find some of that movie magic. Basically, they want her to get it out of her system.
There are references to scenes and characters from many of my favorite movies, including "Notting Hill", "Love Actually", "Four Weddings and a Funeral", "Bridget Jones' Diary", "When Harry Met Sally", "Pretty Woman", "Ocean's Eleven", "Sex and the City", "Titanic", "Sleepless in Seattle", "Pride and Prejudice", "Chocolat", "An Affair to Remember", and countless others. She also encounters some of the actors in London - Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and others. (That part is a bit of a stretch of the imagination, but the sightings are somewhat plausible in the plot.)
I won't give away any more of the plot other than to say it is a fun romp through London, Paris and Scotland, accompanied by plot points from some fun movies. Scarlett makes new friends along the way, solves some of the mysteries of her past, and finds some "movie magic" of her own.
