This book delves into a side of prostitution most people don't ever get to see, let alone understand. Interestingly, this seems to be the result, whether this is the goal or not. I really like when the author talks about philosophy, which she often does in a roundabout way. Because Belle sees the world a certain way, and this perspective varies so greatly from my own, it really made me call into question my prejudices toward prostitution, prejudices that I didn't even realise I had unconsciously formed based on society's norms.Belle writes with wit, clarity and in an honest way that is in turn shocking (which you would expect from a book of its title), and other times surprising and thoughtful. An interesting read, though I found it difficult to keep the details about her personal life straight, due to nomenclature (which I understand is in the interest of protecting identities, but I found that names like A1, A2, A3 and A4 were difficult for me to differentiate without different names).
All said, a worthwhile read.

Belle de Jour Diary of an Unlikely Call Girl Anonymous 9780446577250 Books Reviews
This book is cleverly written and very enjoyable. Belle De Jour captures the perfect scene of a London call girl in this book. I first saw the TV series first with Billie Piper and decided I should read the book. For any who are intending to do that same, the book is certainly different than the show. Its in a journal format, names are different, and events are not as explicit. That being said, I still think this is a great book to get if you are a fan of the show. Its a worthwhile read.
I had watched the cable show based on this book, so wanted to go to the source. I enjoyed the first 20% or so. The author is smart and a reasonably good writer. But in totem this doesn't pass as a "book". The stories don't go anywhere or lead to anything. There is no beginning, middle or end. And the author doesn't seem to learn anything about her time as a call girl. So while interesting voyeuristically, I was bored for the last 80% because it is just more of the same. I can see why this was a popular blog. But didn't translate well into a book.
Really enjoyed kicking back with this book when I didn't feel like reading something heavy. Therefore there were days I would read chapters and not be able to stop, and then other times where I was able to go a few weeks reading something else and come back to this when I feel like something funny, sexy and light. It was an enjoyable read. I recommend not going in though with the picture that Billie Piper portrays so well as the real Belle is a little more, how do I say it.... blunt, hardcore? LOL. The book was just different to the series, both are great in their own way, it's just that Belle in the TV series has a few less 'edges' than the Belle in the book, as is the way with many adaptations put onto screen.
Anyhow I really did enjoy this book, hopefully you will too )
I haven't gotten around to reading the entire book yet, but it is in very good shape and looks like it will be an interesting read. However, the cover of the book is different than the picture advertised. I'm not disappointed but I felt obligated to say something about it. The book I received has a grey background and lipstick on the cover, along with the title.
ADORE the show and the book was equally well written. This was such a splurge for me but it was such a fun and girly read that was excellent for the summer while laying by the pool! I'd recommend this, and then go ahead and find the show online and watch that as well. Super fun!
I actually watched most of the television series before I read this, and I was pleased that they had some similarities, but otherwise they were fairly different universes. In the end, the book was much more entertaining for me. I thought there might be a few more graphic scenes, perhaps as though it would turn into an erotica book, but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. It's a diary of Belle's life as a call girl - why would you write saucy, naughty scenes in your own diary? It makes sense. I genuinely liked the characters. I recall reading a review where someone expressed a dislike for her focus on all the boyfriends in her life, but I actually liked that part of the book - there is a real woman behind the Call Girl image, and I liked seeing that.
That being said, I don't think is for everyone looking for a real story with a beginning, middle, and end. I think you just have to take it as is - a documentation of a woman's life for a short period of time. It was witty, had a definite voice, and made Belle into a character I enjoyed more in print than on the screen. I personally think this would have been really interesting if the author had turned it into a work of fiction with a more developed storyline, hence why I only gave it three stars. Regardless, it was a fast read, quite enjoyable, and I think anyone who is a fan of the show (or interested in the 'Call Girl' culture that has come up from it) would like the book.
I do wish it was a little cheaper for purchase though... 8.66 seemed a little pricey for what you get.
It's a pretty good book and far different from what I usually read. It's taking me a little while to get through probably because I thought it would have a little bit more humor in it. I'll be 100% honest in saying I like to the TV show better which it's almost always the other way around.
